John Joseph Kelson Jr. (27 de fevereiro de 1922 - 28 de abril de 2012), conhecido profissionalmente como Jackie Kelso , foi um saxofonista, flautista e clarinetista de jazz americano .
Biografia
Nascido em Los Angeles, Califórnia, Kelson era o filho mais velho de John Joseph Kelson Sr. e Lillian (nascida Weinberg) Kelson.
Ele começou a ter aulas de clarinete aos oito anos, estudando com Caughey Roberts . Aos quinze anos, Chico Hamilton, colega do Jefferson High School, o incentivou a estudar saxofone alto, e ele fez sua estreia profissional com Jerome Myart no mesmo ano. Na época em que se formou na Jefferson, ele tocava com Hamilton, Buddy Collette e Charles Mingus em clubes na Avenida Central .
Na década de 1940, ele tocou com Barney Bigard , Marshal Royal , Lucky Thompson , Kid Ory , Benny Carter , Benny Goodman , Lionel Hampton e Roy Milton . Ele se alistou na Marinha em outubro de 1942 com Marshal e Ernie Royal, e, depois de treinar em Camp Robert Smalls, foi alocado para os Royals com a banda da Escola Pré-Voo do St Mary's College.
Na década de 1950, ele também se apresentou com Johnny Otis , Billy Vaughan , Nelson Riddle , Bill Berry , Ray Anthony , o Capp-Pierce Juggernaut , Bob Crosby , CL Burke e Duke Ellington . Ele se juntou a Gene Vincent e His Blue Caps em 1958 e participou de várias gravações excelentes desse período, incluindo Say Mama , She She Little Sheila e Ac-centu-ate the Positive . Kelso quase se aposentou da música em 1984, mas voltou a se apresentar em 1995 com a Count Basie Orchestra , onde se tornou regular em 1998. Ele voltou a usar seu nome de nascimento, Kelson, naquele ano também. Ele morreu em 28 de abril de 2012, em Beverly Hills, Califórnia , aos 90 anos.
