Paul Nelson Humphrey (12 de outubro de 1935 - 31 de janeiro de 2014) foi um baterista de jazz e R&B americano .
Biografia
Humphrey nasceu em Detroit e começou a tocar bateria aos 8 anos, tendo aulas particulares em Detroit. No colégio, ele tocava trompa de barítono, trombone e bateria na banda da escola. Após a graduação, ele entrou para a Marinha dos Estados Unidos e estudou com Kenneth J. Abendschein, viajando pelo mundo e tocando com muitas figuras do jazz dos anos 1950.
Após a dispensa do serviço, ele trabalhou como baterista de sessão em Nova York para Wes Montgomery , John Coltrane , Les McCann , Kai Winding , Jimmy Smith , Charles Mingus , Joe Williams , Lee Konitz , Blue Mitchell , Gene Ammons e Harry James Band (substituindo Buddy Rich ). Mais tarde, ele se mudou para Los Angeles e se juntou ao grupo Harry "Sweets" Edison com Tommy Flanagan e Frank Delarossa. Ele gravou com Larry Williams e Johnny "Guitar" Watson e excursionou e gravou com Marvin Gaye , The Four Tops , The Supremes , Tony Orlando , Jerry Garcia , Burt Bacharach , Diahann Carroll , Sammy Davis Jr. e Bill Medley .
Como líder de banda, ele gravou sob o nome de Paul Humphrey and the Cool Aid Chemists com o tecladista Clarence MacDonald , o guitarrista David T. Walker e o baixista Bill Upchurch . Em 1971 esta banda teve dois sucessos, "Cool Aid" (US R&B Singles No. 14) e "Funky LA" (US R&B Singles No. 45). Ele também gravou um álbum como chefe do Paul Humphrey Sextet em 1981.
Humphrey foi um dos bateristas do álbum de Marvin Gaye , Let's Get It On . Ele também gravou com Steely Dan , Frank Zappa , Jimmy Smith , Al Kooper , Jackie DeShannon , Natalie Cole , Albert King , Quincy Jones , Dusty Springfield , Jean-Luc Ponty , Michael Franks , Maria Muldaur , Marc Bolan e muitos outros.
Humphrey foi o baterista da orquestra Lawrence Welk e do programa de televisão Welk de 1976 a 1982.
