As eleições a nível nacional na Itália são convocadas periodicamente para formar um parlamento composto por duas câmaras : a Câmara dos Deputados ( Camera dei Deputati ) com 630 membros; e o Senado da República ( Senato della Repubblica ) com 315 membros eleitos, além de alguns senadores vitalícios nomeados . A Itália é uma república parlamentar : o Presidente da República é eleito por um período de sete anos pelas duas casas do Parlamento em sessão conjunta, juntamente com eleitores especiais nomeados pelos Conselhos Regionais.

Ao longo de sua história, a Itália teve muitos partidos políticos, nacionais e regionais, com diferentes sistemas partidários.

A mais recente eleição geral italiana foi realizada em 4 de março de 2018 .

A última eleição geral foi realizada em 4 de março de 2018.

A aliança de centro-direita, na qual a Liga de Matteo Salvini emergiu como a principal força política, conquistou uma pluralidade de cadeiras na Câmara dos Deputados e no Senado da República. O antiestabelecimento Movimento Cinco Estrelas liderado por Luigi Di Maio tornou-se o partido com o maior número de votos, e a coalizão de centro-esquerda, liderada pelo ex-primeiro-ministro Matteo Renzi , ficou em terceiro lugar. No entanto, nenhum grupo político ou partido obteve uma maioria absoluta, resultando em um parlamento travado .

Após três meses de negociação, uma coalizão foi finalmente formada em 1 de junho entre o M5S e a Liga, cujos líderes se tornaram vice-primeiros-ministros em um governo liderado pelo independente Giuseppe Conte ligado ao M5S como primeiro-ministro.

Referendos

Artigo principal: Referendos na Itália

A constituição da Itália prevê dois tipos de referendos vinculativos.

Um referendo legislativo pode ser convocado para revogar uma lei total ou parcialmente, se solicitado por 500.000 eleitores ou cinco conselhos regionais. Este tipo de referendo só é válido se pelo menos a maioria dos eleitores comparecer às assembleias de voto. É proibida a convocação de referendo sobre leis financeiras ou leis relativas a indultos ou ratificação de tratados internacionais.

Um referendo constitucional pode ser convocado para aprovar uma lei ou emenda constitucional somente quando aprovada pelas Câmaras ( Câmara dos Deputados e Senado da República ) com maioria inferior a dois terços em ambas ou em uma das Câmaras , e somente a pedido de um quinto dos membros de qualquer uma das Câmaras , ou 500.000 eleitores ou cinco Conselhos Regionais . Um referendo constitucional é válido independentemente do número de eleitores que vão à assembleia de voto. Qualquer cidadão com direito a voto em uma eleição para a Câmara dos Deputados pode participar de um referendo.
