As fomes incluídas aqui ocorreram tanto nos estados principescos (regiões administradas por governantes indianos), na Índia Britânica (regiões administradas pela British East India Company de 1765 a 1857; ou pela Coroa Britânica , no Raj Britânico , de 1858 a 1947) e territórios indianos independentes do domínio britânico, como o Império Maratha .
