Christopher Hibbert MC (nascido Arthur Raymond Hibbert ; 5 de março de 1924 - 21 de dezembro de 2008) foi um autor, historiador e biógrafo inglês. Ele foi chamado de "uma pérola de biógrafos" ( New Statesman ) e "provavelmente o historiador popular mais lido de nosso tempo e, sem dúvida, um dos mais prolíficos" ( The Times ). Hibbert foi membro da Royal Society of Literature e autor de muitos livros, incluindo The Story of England , Disraeli , Edward VII , George IV , The Rise and Fall of the House of Medici e Cavaliers and Roundheads .

Biografia

Arthur Raymond Hibbert nasceu em Enderby , Leicestershire em 1924, filho do Cônego HV Hibbert (falecido em 1980) e sua esposa Maude. Ele era o segundo de três filhos e batizou Arthur Raymond. Ele foi educado no Radley College em Oxfordshire antes de ir para o Oriel College na Universidade de Oxford . Ele foi agraciado com os graus de BA e, posteriormente, MA .

Ele deixou o Oriel College para se juntar ao Exército , onde um sargento-mor se referia a Hibbert como " Christopher Robin " (dos livros do Ursinho Pooh ) com base em sua aparência jovem. O nome "Christopher" subsequentemente pegou. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Hibbert serviu como oficial de infantaria no regimento de Rifles irlandeses de Londres na Itália, chegando ao posto de capitão. Ele foi ferido duas vezes e recebeu a Cruz Militar em 1945.

De 1945 a 1959, ele foi sócio de uma empresa de corretores de terras e leiloeiros e começou sua carreira de escritor em 1957. Hibbert recebeu o Prêmio Heinemann de Literatura em 1962 por A Destruição de Lord Raglan e a Medalha McColvin da Biblioteca Association em 1989. Christopher Hibbert foi Fellow da Royal Society of Literature e da Royal Geographical Society , e recebeu um Doutorado Honorário em Literatura pela Universidade de Leicester .

Vida pessoal

Hibbert morava em Henley-on-Thames , Oxfordshire, e era membro do Army and Navy Club e do Garrick Club . Ele era casado com Susan Piggford e o casal tinha três filhos: sua executora literária Kate Hibbert, o escritor de televisão Jimmy Hibbert e o jornalista musical Tom Hibbert .

Ele morreu em 21 de dezembro de 2008, em Henley, de pneumonia brônquica aos 84 anos. Ele foi cremado, após uma cerimônia humanista em Oxford, em 2 de janeiro de 2009.
